Microsoft Creates Autonomous Party Photographer Robot

Say what you want about Internet Explorer 6 or Windows Vista, Microsoft still has the ability to innovate when they want to.  Cameras have become so easy that all you have to in some cases is press a button.  Now it seems that humans are not even required to do that. Microsoft combined one part robot, one part Microsoft Kinect, and one DSLR to create an autonomous roving robot that will snap photos whenever it encounters a human looking figure.

The best part is that you can build your own roving photographer.  For a mere $1249 you can buy the base robot. Then add your own DSLR and program the robot over a weekend using Microsoft’s Robotics Developer Studio.  Programming Asimov’s Laws may require a bit longer.  Just make sure you program a kill switch in case the robot decides to turn on you, or worse, photograph you in bad light.

This is the most BLATANT theft of intellectual copyright I’ve ever seen. The American artist Ken Rinaldo created the Paparazzi Bots in 2009, exactly the same concept, and what’s worse, Microsoft is SURELY aware of them as them were exhibited at Nuit Blanche in Toronto just last year and shown nationwide on Canada’s CBC. Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves. http://vimeo.com/31970170
